Alice Marie Smith |
Some time after her teen years, she started spelling her name as Alyce. She used that for the rest of her life, although it was never a legal change.
At the age of 22, she married Robert 'Bill' William Miller Jr. on 22 Nov 1946 in Ojai, Ventura County, California. He had returned from serving in World War II and his family lived nearby to members of the Smith family who were living in Ojai for a short time. His sisters had made plans with her sisters to get them together!
Bill and Alyce had 3 boys and an adopted daughter.
Shortly before her death in 1987, she told me that she had been married previous to Bill and they had lived in Alabama. Her new husband was in the service and the marriage lasted less than a year. Although at Alyce's funeral, her sister Venna revealed that there had been a baby born during that time that had died. Not much more is known of this marriage and baby. Bill has told me that she had gone to Idaho to finalize a divorce before they were married, but he not talked much more about this, nor wants to at this date.
Alyce and Bill lived in Ojai CA; Burley, ID; Valinda, CA; Chowchilla, CA; Hemet, CA; and San Jacinto, CA during their married life.

Alyce was loved by all. People were drawn to her. She loved to serve in the church, travel, wrote poetry and loved being with her family. She was an 'Avon lady' for years and her skin was soft! Not to give Avon the credit, as it was just her genetic make-up. She wore a musk called 'Skin' and always smelled so good.
She suffered a stroke on Mother's Day in 1987. She was taken to the hospital, returned home, but died on 14 Jun 1987 in the Kaiser Hospital Care facility in Fontana, San Bernardino County, CA, suffering subsequent strokes that took her life. She was buried in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside County, CA on 18 Jun 1987.
