Edward Robert Smith (1903-1992)

Edward Robert Smith, son of William Robert Smith and Martha Annie Turpin, was born on 2 Jul 1903 in Northfleet, Kent, England. At the age of 7, Robert and his family immigrated to the United States. They sailed from Liverpool on 18 Jun 1910 on the ship, Dominion, landing in Quebec, Canada. Their last residence is shown as Gravesend and their destination is Preston.

Ed married Pauline Quinn Bailey on 1 Jul 1925 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They had 3 children, the first being Donna Gene Smith. She passed away on 17 Feb 2011.

Ed died on 30 Apr 1992 in Sandy, Salt Lake Co, Utah, aged 88 years 9 months 28 days.

EDWARD ROBERT SMITH

PROVO-Edward Robert Smith, age 88, a well known Provo resident and businessman died on April 30, 1992 at the Sandy Regional Medical Center, of causes incident to age.

He was born on July 2, 1903 in Gravesend, Kent, England, a son of William Robert and Martha Turpin Smith. He married Pauline Bailey, July 1, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple; she preceded him in death June 14, 1991 after 66 years of marriage. Edward and his family came to the United States from England in 1910 and made their home in Preston, Idaho; where he graduated from Preston High School. He began his career by assisting his father in the family grocery business in Preston. Later moving to Salt Lake City where he worked for the Salt Lake Transportation Company and where he met his future wife. Soon after their marriage the couple moved to Provo and founded the Yellow Cab & Transfer Co. now All-State Moving & Storage, Mr. Smith was owner and manager of the company for over 35 years before retiring in 1975.

He served the LDS Church as a member of the High Priest Quorum of the Provo 13th LDS Ward for many years. He was a member and former president of the Provo Lions Club, and an active supporter of civic groups and BYU sports organizations.He is survived by one son and two daughters, Robert Bailey Smith, wife Jeanette, Provo; Mrs. Dale D. (Donna Gene) Parker, Bountiful; Mrs. Lee R. (Sheryll) Brown, Seminole, Florida; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph T. Smith, Orem; Willis D. Smith, San Monica, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Vena) Sim, Oakhurst, Calif.

Funeral services will be Monday, May 4, 1992 at 11 a.m. in the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 E. Center Street, Provo. Friends may call Sunday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Berg Mortuary Chapel, or one hour prior to services Monday.

Interment, East Lawn Memorial Hills, Provo.

Pauline Bailey Smith, age 88, of Provo, died June 14, 1991, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, Provo, of a heart attack.

Born December 2, 1902 in Monticello, Utah to John E. and Magnolia Walton Bailey. Married Edward Robert Smith, July 1, 1925 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Received her education in Monticello and graduated from High School. Following her marriage, they made their home in Salt Lake City, then moved to Provo. She assisted her husband in his business, Yellow Cab and Transfer Company. Active member of the LDS Church, served in many positions. Member of the Provo Lady Lions. She supported and created a world of love, which embraced her family and friends.Survived by husband of 67 years, of Provo; one son, two daughters, Robert Bailey and his wife, Jeanette Smith, Provo; Mrs. Dale D. (Donna Gene) Parker, Bountiful; Mrs. Lee R. (Sheryll) Brown, of Seminola, Florida; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Pender Lee (Melba) Jennings, St. George. Preceded in death by a grandson, four brothers, one sister, and father and mother.

Funeral services, Monday, 11 a.m. at the Provo 12th-13th Ward Chapel, 945 East 700 North, Provo. Friends may call at Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center, Sunday 6-8 p.m. or at the ward chapel on Monday one hour prior to services. Interment, Eastlawn Memorial Hills, Provo.
