William "Bill" Herbert Smith (1900-1962)

William Herbert Smith was born on 13 Jun 1900 in Westminster, London, England.[1] His father William was 22 and his mother Martha was 23. In the 1901 England Census, William H. Smith was one year old and lived in London, England with his mother and father.

In June of 1910, at the age of 10, William left Liverpool, England with his family, arriving in Quebec, Canada. The family was headed for Preston, Idaho. [2]

In 1920 Federal Census, William was 19 years old and lived in Preston, Idaho with his father, mother, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Later in the year on 29 Sept 1920, in Cache Co., Utah, William married Catherine Alvina Daines.[3] She had been born in Preston, Idaho in 1900. While living in Preston, they became the parents of Wildene Martha Smith and June LaPriel Smith.

Catherine later married Yeppa Lund and it was in that household that the girls were raised, as stated in June's obituary. [4]

Sometime before 1930, William married Nancy Norton or Howard. This Howard name was shown on a family group record in my possession, with no further information. They are shown in the 1930 US Census, living in Mount Vernon, Skagit, WA and in the 1940 US Census, her name is shown as Nancy Norton Smith, residing in Los Angeles, CA.

Later, William married a Canadian woman. William's British Columbia Death Registration, 1872-1986, found on FamilySearch, shows her as Vivian Teslin Maddison. Maddison was her mother's maiden name.

He died on 7 December 1962 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Vancouver, B.C., Canada at the age of 62. His occupation was store owner and his cause of death was carcinoma of his lung. His remains were buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

The Report of the Death of an American Citizen from the Foreign Service of the United States, remarks that "Mr. Smith was not a Social Security beneficiary. Certificate of Naturalization No. 1765402 issued to William Herbert Smith showing naturalization on August 11, 1922 before the First District Court of Cache County, Logan, Utah." At the time of his naturalization, his last known address was 708 Meador Street, Bellingham, Washington. On this document, Vivian is shown as both a widow and a wife of William.
