Note on 13 June 2016: Bob's death was an unattended death and the Coroner's office has not yet determined the day of death.
Note on 29 Jul 2016: The amended death certificate was issued and shows the death date as 16 May 2016, the day Bob was found in his home. I guess it was determined to use that date of DOD, although other factors known, lead to conclude it was at an earlier date.

Harold Turpin Smith (1912-1913)
Infant death |
Harold was the 6th and last child. The rest of his family had immigrated to Preston, coming from Gravesend, England in 1910, making him the only family member born in the United States.
Also, little known to the family at this time, Ariel Davis Campbell had been born days earlier, on 6 Oct 1912. His mother, Sarah Davis, would become the second wife of William Robert Smith, making he and Harold step-brothers.
Two years to the date of Harold's death, his mother Martha would pass away on 20 Jan 1915, from the results of a pelvic absess, contributed by chronic appendicitis. She died while traveling on a train to the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Historical events around the time of Harold's birth and death:
- On 14 Oct 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was shot and wounded by a .38 caliber bullet fired by John Schrank, a New York City saloonkeeper, who was standing at a distance of only 30 feet. He was there to give a speech, but the bullet was slowed when it passed through Roosevelt's metal eyeglasses case and the folded, fifty-page manuscript of his prepared speech. It still penetrated three inches into his chest, too close to the heart to be safely removed by surgery. Schrank was tackled by bystanders before he could fire a second shot, and Roosevelt went on to deliver his speech before getting medical treatment. Schrank would be found insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital.
- On 30 Jan 1913, the town of Preston, Idaho became a part of the newly formed Franklin County, named after Franklin D. Richards, an apostle for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is the only Franklin County not named after Benjamin Franklin. A portion of Power County and Oneida County was taken to form this new county.
- On 9 Jan 1913, Richard Nixon was born in a house his father had built in Yorba Linda, California.

When we are young
We dream
When we are old
We remember
Sometimes our young dreams come true.
Oftimes they perish and fade away.
God in his wisdom gave us youth
With its fearlessness and drive
Without it, age would have little to remember!

Alice Marie Smith
Alice Marie Smith |
Some time after her teen years, she started spelling her name as Alyce. She used that for the rest of her life, although it was never a legal change.
At the age of 22, she married Robert 'Bill' William Miller Jr. on 22 Nov 1946 in Ojai, Ventura County, California. He had returned from serving in World War II and his family lived nearby to members of the Smith family who were living in Ojai for a short time. His sisters had made plans with her sisters to get them together!
Bill and Alyce had 3 boys and an adopted daughter.
Shortly before her death in 1987, she told me that she had been married previous to Bill and they had lived in Alabama. Her new husband was in the service and the marriage lasted less than a year. Although at Alyce's funeral, her sister Venna revealed that there had been a baby born during that time that had died. Not much more is known of this marriage and baby. Bill has told me that she had gone to Idaho to finalize a divorce before they were married, but he not talked much more about this, nor wants to at this date.
Alyce and Bill lived in Ojai CA; Burley, ID; Valinda, CA; Chowchilla, CA; Hemet, CA; and San Jacinto, CA during their married life.
Alyce Miller |
Alyce was loved by all. People were drawn to her. She loved to serve in the church, travel, wrote poetry and loved being with her family. She was an 'Avon lady' for years and her skin was soft! Not to give Avon the credit, as it was just her genetic make-up. She wore a musk called 'Skin' and always smelled so good.
She suffered a stroke on Mother's Day in 1987. She was taken to the hospital, returned home, but died on 14 Jun 1987 in the Kaiser Hospital Care facility in Fontana, San Bernardino County, CA, suffering subsequent strokes that took her life. She was buried in the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside County, CA on 18 Jun 1987.
